Leaving your house empty for a long period of time is a prime target for intruders. When leaving for an extended holiday, take the following steps to give your house that "lived in" look and reduce the chances of a break-in:
- Cancel milk and papers.
- Have mail held or redirected.
- Have a friend remove junk mail and mow the lawn.
- Turn down the telephone.
- Inform your alarm company and local police of your absence and leave contact name and number.
- Wheelie bins should be locked away or chained to posts away from windows.
- Have a friend or neighbour bring in your wheelie bin after being emptied.
- You should also make sure all doors and windows are securely locked with keyed locks
- If possible install timers for your lights to switch on and off
- Never leave voice answering messages that indicate you are away
- Leave a key with a neighbour should they need access with police
- Place stickers on your windows and fence that your premise is monitored by an electronic security system.
- Insure your belongings with contents insurance. Most insurance companies offer reduced premiums for people with back to base monitored alarm systems
